ARTIST STATEMENT / MANIFESTO
THE SAILS is a body of work within my broader artistic practice CULTURAL STRATA.
For many years, I have been working around historic sailing ships through photography, drawing, and long-term observation. My interest extends beyond the vessels themselves to the people, routines, environments, and forms of knowledge that continue to exist around them.
I spend time aboard ships during voyages, festivals, and training programs, observing everyday life at sea: crews at work, cadets learning traditional skills, life below deck, changing weather, shifting light, and the rhythms that emerge between people and the maritime environment.
I do not approach historic sailing ships as symbols of nostalgia or remnants of a vanished world. What interests me is their continued presence within contemporary life. They remain places where knowledge is transmitted through practice, where experience is embodied rather than abstract, and where relationships between people, technology, nature, and time become visible.
Through images of ships, open water, weather, horizons, and human activity, THE SAILS explores continuity — not as an idea of preservation alone, but as an active process through which cultural experience is carried forward and reinterpreted by each generation

What if the past never really leaves us? What if it doesn't sit in archives, but lives inside us — compressed, fused, and still active?
Elena Mashkova's project The Sintering of Time explores exactly that. She doesn't treat history as a timeline you can scroll through. Instead, she sees it as something that has been pressing down on us for centuries, until it became a solid, inseparable part of how we see the world today.
Her chosen archetype is the tall ship — a shape so deeply embedded in human culture that it no longer needs a name. The artist strips away all documentary references. No historical events, no specific vessels. What remains is a pure emblem, pulled from the collective memory. Sailors and navigators once fused this silhouette into our visual language; now it still quietly shapes how we understand space, freedom, and time.
The exhibition itself is built on contrasts. Bright, blinding light meets dark, dense water. Large panoramic prints sit next to small, intimate formats — forcing you to physically move closer and further away. As you walk through the space, the ship reveals itself slowly: first as a ghostly outline, then through the intricate web of rigging, a faint human presence, and finally — a single mast rising toward an empty sky.
There is no decorative romance here. Each frame is complete in itself, rejecting sentiment in favor of something denser. The past and present don't compete — they coexist, condensing every passing moment into something that feels almost timeless.

Elena Mashkova’s project CULTURAL STRATA: THE SAILS offers a departure from the conventional, linear perception of history. Through the artist’s lens, the past is not a distant memory left behind, nor is it preserved as static archival chronicles. Rather, centuries and millennia of human experience, embedded within our genetic memory, remain fully alive in the present. They have compacted and fused — effectively sintering under the immense tectonic pressure of centuries — into the dense, indivisible matrix of our current reality.
As her central archetype, Mashkova Elena selects the tall ship — one of the most potent visual codes in civilizational history. In some researches the artist deliberately depersonalizes the subject. Stripped of names and documentary references, these vessels transform into pure, structuralist emblems dredged from the depths of the collective unconscious. The great sailors and navigators of bygone eras permanently fused this silhouette into the fabric of human culture; today, it continues to invisibly govern our perception of space, freedom, and time.
The space within each frame is deliberately self-contained: it rejects decorative romance in favor of a dense cultural fusion. Here, the present does not displace or oppose the past. They exist in absolute synergy, condensing every passing second of the here and now into a state of eternity
